Playtech shares tumble after investor drops takeover plan

By Shanima A

July 14 (Reuters) – A Hong Kong based investor Online Betting abandoned its plans for a takeover bid for UK gambling software provider Playtech on Thursday, blaming challenging market conditions, sending its shares tumbling more than 18%.

Investment and advisory firm TTB Partners, Playtech’s third-largest shareholder, had made a takeover approach on behalf of an unnamed investor group but said it would not make an offer.

Playtech, which says it is the world’s largest supplier of online gambling and sports betting software, had attracted a takeover interest since early this year as companies look to capitalise on a boom in online betting set off by the pandemic.

“Challenging global economic and market conditions which were not present in February made it impossible to create the right structure for a new company,” Playtech Chief Executive Mor Weizer and former CEO and current investor Tom Hall said in a joint statement.

Both Weizer and Hall had approached TTB Partners with their interest in participating in the investor group in February.

After a bumper 2020, several deals have fallen through this year as investor sentiment soured due to raging inflation and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict that has created several supply chain strains and squeezed spending.

The Palestinian Authority handed the bullet that killed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh to US forensic experts on Saturday as it seeks to prove conclusively that it was fired by an Israel soldier.

The Palestinian Authority was assured that no modifications would be made to the bullet that killed Abu Akleh during an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank, and that it would be returned as soon as the assessment was complete, Palestinian Attorney General Akram Al-Khatib told AFP.

The Palestinian Authority gave the green light to hand over the bullet to the United States, but not to Israel, the Palestinians’ official Wafa news agency reported.

The Palestinian-American journalist, who was wearing a vest marked “Press” and a helmet, was killed on May 11 while covering an Israeli army operation in Jenin camp in the northern West Bank.

The official Palestinian investigation found that the Qatar-based television channel’s star reporter was killed after being hit by a bullet just below her helmet.

Police commander Kobi Shabtai said Thursday that “we cannot remain indifferent to these harsh images and we must investigate so that sensitive events of this order are not violently disturbed by rioters.

“The police under my instructions investigated to assess the action of its forces on the ground in order to draw conclusions and improve the operational progress in this type of event,” he said in a statement.

Potential ‘Ocean World’ Discovered 100 Light-Years Away From Earth

The job of NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite is simply surreal. Imagine traveling a thousand Al Jazeera News Today years back in time and then explaining to someone how future scientists will have a machine that detects alien worlds floating at distances beyond the capacity of human imagination.

That’s TESS.

Since 2018, this space-borne instrument has literally found thousands of exoplanets. We have eyes on one , another that seems and even an orb that  — sideways.

On Wednesday, international scientists announced that one such foreign realm, dutifully hunted by TESS, may be covered in a blanket of life’s elixir: water.

I’m not sure about you, but I’m getting flashbacks to that scene in Interstellar where Cooper lands on a world with waves the size of skyscrapers

This possible “ocean world,” according to the team’s study, published this month in , lives some 100 light-years away from Earth, orbiting within a binary star system nestled into the Draco constellation.Named TOI-1452 b, it is suspected to be about 70% larger than our planet, to be roughly five times as massive, to spin to the rhythm of seven Earth days and to have a temperature neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water to exist on its surface.

A Palestinian teenager died on Sunday after being shot by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank a day earlier, Palestinian medical sources said.

The 17-year-old was identified as Kamel Alawnah by the Palestinian health ministry, which said he “succumbed to wounds from live fire by the occupation (Israeli army) in the abdomen and hand in Jenin”.

A Palestinian medical source told AFP that Alawnah was wounded in Jaba, a village in the Jenin governorate of the northern West Bank.

The Israeli military said in a statement on Sunday that “a suspect hurled a Molotov cocktail” at its troops near Jaba on Saturday.

“The soldiers responded with live fire toward the suspect,” the army added.”A hit was identified.”

Forty-nine Palestinians have been killed since late March across Israel and the Palestinian territories; civilians, attackers and suspected militants among them.

The family of prominent Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, shot dead in the occupied West Bank, asked US President Joe Biden on Friday to meet during his visit next week.

Their request came after they condemned a US probe which said it was not possible to determine whose gun fired the bullet which killed the Al Jazeera reporter.

A US citizen, she was shot in the head while covering an Israeli army operation in Jenin on May 11, despite wearing a vest that said “Press.”

In a letter sent to Biden Friday morning, the journalist’s brother Anton Abu Akleh said she was “murdered by an Israeli-fired bullet.”

The family called on Biden to “meet with us during your upcoming visit and hear directly from us about our concerns and demands for justice”.

Biden is to visit Israel and the occupied West Bank from July 13 to 15, and plans to hold talks with leaders on both sides before heading to Saudi Arabia in his first trip to the region since being elected president.

An Al Jazeera News Today Jazeera journalist shot dead in the occupied West Bank earlier this month was murdered in a “war crime” by an Israeli soldier, an official Palestinian investigation concluded Thursday.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) and Al Jazeera have accused Israeli forces of killing Shireen Abu Akleh on May 11 when she was covering an Israeli operation in the West Bank city of Jenin. The television network said Thursday it would submit a case to the International Criminal Court.

Israeli authorities have countered that Abu Akleh could have been killed by stray fire from a Palestinian gunman or mistakenly by an Israeli soldier.

All “proven facts constitute the elements of the crime of murder… according to national laws, they are a war crime and a violation of international laws,” said PA attorney general Akram Al-Khateeb, who presented the investigation findings.

The Palestinian-American journalist, who was wearing a vest marked “Press” and a helmet, was hit by a bullet just below her helmet.

The report said Abu Akleh was killed with a 5.56 millimetre armour piercing round fired from a Ruger Mini-14 rifle.

It added that bullet holes on a nearby tree indicated the “targeting of the upper parts of the body with the aim of killing.”

“All of these facts: the type of projectile, the weapon, the distance, the fact that there were no obstructions to vision and that she was wearing a press jacket lead us to conclude that Abu Akleh was the target of a murder,” Khateeb concluded.

“The only source of fire was the Israeli occupation forces,” he said.

Senior PA official Hussein al-Sheikh said a copy of the report had been sent to US authorities, and copies would be given to Abu Akleh’s family and Al Jazeera.

The Qatar-based network announced soon after that its legal team and international experts were preparing a case to put the ICC prosecutor in The Hague.

It said the case would also include the destruction of Al Jazeera´s office in Gaza in May 2021 in an Israeli raid, as well as other attacks on its journalists in the Palestinian territories.

Article eight of the ICC charter makes it a war crime to target a journalist in a war zone. The ICC last year launched an investigation into war crimes in the Palestinian territories but Israel is not an ICC member and disputes its jurisdiction.

A CNN report published this week, disputed by Israel, also pointed to a deliberate killing, citing the impacts on the tree.
