After being diagnosed with cancer eight years ago my whole world fell apart. I had no hope and no idea about what I should do. The first few months it was difficult to stay on top of my day-to-day tasks and I was not sure I could overcome this. However, after I attended a meeting of the peer support network (which is unfortunately no longer in existence) I gained some confidence and faith that I was able to conquer this battle. My outlook on life was positively optimistic and I started to see that there were others facing similar issues and in fact beaten cancer as well.

What I did realize during that period was that having cancer wasn’t a huge hurdle when it came time to come to terms with my diagnosis. It’s amazing how quickly the diagnosis of cancer, and even being diagnosed with cancer can set back. The most helpful thing was realising that I had lot of friends who also went through what I was going through. I began to communicate with them more regularly and started to realise that I was not being the only one. It was simpler for me accept the diagnosis and understand how to handle it and in turn become stronger and healthier.

Now, cancer is a huge issue for so many people in our society With the help of a solid peer support system, it’s easy to seek assistance and understanding from other people. With the right network of friends to speak to, it helps to be motivated to achieve anything. Peer support groups provide an incredible platform for sharing your experiences with others , and also learning from other members. One of my favorite groups is one that is based in my home country, New Zealand. The guys are aged in their late 40s and range between early-stage prostate cancer survivors to cancer patients who have recently undergoing surgery. They have assisted a lot of people deal with their cancer challenges, both physically and emotionally over the years.

The most significant benefit of being part of a peer support group is the immediate help that you receive. Even if you’re just starting out in the battle speaking to others who are in a similar circumstance can save your life. One of the most important benefits of joining a group is the chance to discuss what you have learned from your experiences both professionally and personally.
