Cards' Dakota Hudson faces Cubs, aiming for postseason role

Dakota Hudson will continue his comeback from Tommy John surgery when the St.

Louis Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Hudson (1-0, 4.91 ERA) will draw the start in the opener of the three-game series against the injury- and illness-depleted Cubs. He will be making his second appearance for the Cardinals since completing his rehabilitation from the September 2020 operation.

“He’s just back in the big leagues. Let’s be reasonable about it, what it is,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said.

“You want to be smart about it. He’s back on the mound, getting another opportunity. He’s going to get about 70 or 75 pitches, around that area, depending on how hard he’s working, and we’ll go from there.”

Hudson went 16-7 with a 3.35 ERA in 2019 and 3-2 with a 2.77 ERA in eight starts last season before sustaining the elbow injury.

His first game back came against the Cubs on Sept.

24. He earned the victory while working 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

“It was just great being able to get back out there,” Hudson said. “I was able to prepare well and (catcher Yadier Molina) was running the show for me. Just trusting the defense, being me and seeing what I can do, it was a blast to get back.”

St.

Louis, which has won 18 of its past 19 games, will visit the National League West runner-up in the wild-card game on Wednesday.

The Cardinals (89-70) are still determining what role, if any, Hudson and fellow right-hander Jack Flaherty will have in postseason play.

Flaherty is working his way back from shoulder soreness.

“Let’s temper about Jack and some degree Dak as well,” Shildt said. “I know the names dictate, ‘Hey, we want them to be this and this.’ Let’s make sure they’re healthy and getting work off the mound. That’s the priority, the responsibility to those two.”

The Cubs (69-90) have used the final weeks of the season to assess players who could be part of their ongoing rebuild.

They come into the series after 3-2 and 9-0 victories over the Pittsburgh Pirates the past two days.

Prior detik to that, the Cubs had lost 14 of 16 games.

The Cubs will close out the season without several players who played down the stretch. Shortstop Nico Hoerner (general soreness), infielder/outfielder Patrick Wisdom (undisclosed), catcher Austin Romine (undisclosed), pitcher Keegan Thompson (shoulder soreness) and outfielder Jason Heyward (concussion) are all sidelined.

Second baseman David Bote left the game Thursday with right shoulder discomfort and is questionable for Friday.

The Cubs remained undecided on a starting pitcher for the series opener.

The mounting injury/illness list prompted the Cubs to summon another half-dozen minor league players to help them get through the end of the season. A COVID-19 outbreak would make it difficult to play the final weekend.

“They’re here as an abundance of caution,” Chicago manager David Ross said.

“You’ve got to have some backups in case something is more serious. But still running through all the testing and think we’ve got it, for now, contained.”

The Cardinals have been playing without shortstop Edmundo Sosa (bruised wrist) and Molina (shoulder soreness).

Both are questionable for Friday.

Dune review: Stirring and weird sci-fi epic cuts off just as it’s getting good

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body” data-component=”trackCWV”>

Welcome to the world of Dune for 2021 (fingers crossed for the sequel).

Warner Bros.

The Dune saga is as intriguing and ambiguous as the desert’s shifting sands. So it’s fitting that a star-studded new movie adaptation is both hugely satisfying and deeply frustrating. This is a tour de force of cinematic sci-fi, a star-studded yet deeply weird fantasy epic, a thoughtful and thrilling movie experience.

Then it stops right in the middle.

Directed by Denis Villenueve, this new version of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel opens with a title that reads “Dune: Part One.” That’s the first sign the film isn’t going to give you a lot of closure. Instead, it’s packed with ideas and stunning visuals and information by the spaceship-load, all to set up a story that’s just getting going when out of nowhere the credits roll.

Premiering at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, Dune is in theaters Oct. 22. It’ll also be released that same day on streaming service , and will be available to stream at home for a month.

CNET Culture

Entertain your brain with the coolest news from streaming to superheroes, memes to video games.

The powerful Atreides and Harkonnen families are space aristos squabbling over the planet Arrakis, a desert world where the only thing more treacherous than the shifting sands is the backstabbing politics. Arrakis is the only source of spice, a substance that acts as the fuel for space travel in the Dune universe. On Arrakis, spice glitters in the very air, riches so intoxicating you can taste them.

Spice has a mysterious allure for Timothée Chalamet’s young princeling Paul Atreides. He’s got a lot going on: His dad () is an upright duke teaching him to play the game of cosmic realpolitik; his mom () is a superpowered space witch; he’s plagued by horny teen dreams of a blue-eyed desert warrior (); and he just might be an intergalactic messiah.

Paul is at the heart of this thumping space epic, which combines Shakespearian castle intrigue with wide-screen desert vistas, incendiary battle scenes and a cast of billions. In Villeneuve’s hands, this version of Dune is a richly detailed and hugely evocative imagining filled with striking imagery. It’s supremely and winningly odd.

The film juxtaposes fever-dream science-fantasy with medieval imagery: Sinister space nuns in billowing robes descend from looming spaceships; Interplanetary treaties are endorsed with wax seals beneath fluttering banners; Berserker armies make blood sacrifices before donning silent jetpacks. It’s all faceless helmets and deep shadows as the action moves from rain-slicked granite to iridescent sand, set to a hypnotic and throbbing Hans Zimmer score of wailing choirs, electric drones, nerve-jangling percussion and great honking bwaarrrrps. And bagpipes.

Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac are concerned parents in Dune.

Warner Bros.

The rain-lashed home world of the upright House Atreides is perfect for moody pacing on wave-battered cliffs. The vaguely Catholic decor of that world includes a bullfighting motif, which suggests two separate but intertwined themes: a foolhardy fight against an unpredictable opponent, and a link to Spain that recalls Spanish conquistadors of old.

That link to ancient invaders highlights the timelessness of the urge to conquer and enslave, drawing a line from the past to the present. Dune’s theme of ransacking desert resources has always resonated with western manipulation and exploitation of the rest of the world, from bygone days of colonialism to the Gulf War and the War on Terror. The conflict is explicitly grounded by Villeneuve and cinematographer Greig Fraser in the visual style of a modern war movie. Dragonfly-like aircraft thrum past the camera like Vietnam-era helicopter gunships as the air fills with distinctly 20th century radio chatter. All that’s missing is Ride of the Valkyries on the soundtrack as Dune channels combat flicks from Apocalypse Now to Lawrence of Arabia to Black Hawk Down.

The film opens with an army suddenly withdrawing from Arrakis, and it’s a chilling image in light of the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan in recent weeks.

“Arrakis has seen men like you come and go,” says one indigenous character. “Who will our next oppressor be?” asks the world-weary narrator.

The conflict is explicitly driven by wealth, and it’s fascinating to see a sci-fi movie grapple with the economic aspect of politics as well as the familiar interplanetary power struggles of Star Wars and Star Trek. House Atreides may be noble and the Harkonnens venal, but their nature is irrelevant in this galactic economy: No matter how they feel about it, they must fill their quotas. Space capitalism!

It’s hardly a polemic, however. There are so many ideas flying about in this film that many are mentioned only once, and you’re invited to develop your own thoughts on inequality, scarcity of resources, climate crisis, war, feudalism, space travel, dreams, parenthood, oneness with nature, and so much more. As if that wasn’t enough to mull over, it’s all wrapped up in a dense lore of , which means multiple voice-overs explaining it all.

The weirdness of the sci-fi is also grounded by a limited range of color on screen. Beyond the blackness of space, the only colors in this universe are gray and beige. Don’t get me wrong, Dune looks great, but outside of the fantastical design, the muted palette borders on drab.

Rebecca Ferguson gets weird in Dune.

Warner Bros.

The acting is also similarly muted: everybody is impassive and solemn and mutters the often incomprehensible dialogue in hushed tones. Like Villeneuve’s previous films, it’s dramatic and intense. But it’s also rather one-note, allowing to stand out, for example, just by showing that he’s enjoying himself. The most dynamic range comes from Ferguson as the conflicted Atreides matriarch, embodying the emotional turmoil of a character who’s both impassioned mother and scheming zealot.

As for detik the actor in the leading role, Chalamet’s cheekbones and soulful eyes do most of the storytelling. Like Ryan Gosling in , he doesn’t have a great deal to say, which makes his character either beguilingly ambiguous or vaguely defined. Is he dutiful or distracted? Is he a reluctant leader or ambitious plotter?

The young prince is troubled by visions of the future, and they’re troubling for the viewer too. Some of those visions flash forward to a sequel, and frankly look more exciting than some of part one’s drawn-out sequences. With such an abrupt ending begging for a sequel, you might wonder if they’ve shot the two films together. Nope: The — and only if this first film is a success, which is far from guaranteed in the face of a pandemic and a streaming release potentially cannibalizing its box office takings.

If you loved Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, then Dune is perhaps at his Villeneuviest. If you love sweeping military sci-fi with a dash of weirdness thrown in, Dune will be your jam. The muted palette and performances won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I could spend a lot more time in this world — when the sequel finally arrives, anyway. Even if it doesn’t deliver much of an ending, this new Dune is a hell of a beginning.

The deal only applies to those with an unlimited plan and a 36-month installment plan. You must have an eligible trade-in that’s in good, working condition. T-Mobile is also offering up to $1,000 off a new iPhone 13 Pro (or the full amount off an iPhone 13 series) with 30 monthly bill credits on the company’s zero-interest Equipment Installment Plan when trading in an eligible device. The deal only applies to unlimited T-Mobile or Sprint plans, specifically those with Magenta Max or Sprint Max.

You can still get the iPhone 13 and enroll in the Forever Upgrade program if you don’t have a qualifying trade-in device right now. You’ll get up to $800 off your next upgrade after two years if you want to upgrade and your phone is in good, working condition.

Verizon’s best deal is for the 128GB iPhone 13 Pro, which new and existing customers can get for free with selected trade-ins alongside an unlimited plan. For all other models, new and existing Verizon customers can get up to $1,000 off with an eligible trade-in. Verizon will also cover up to $500 for new customers to switch and the two offers can be combined. So if you’re thinking of switching to Verizon, you can get up to $1,500 off the new iPhone 13. However, the deal only applies to select unlimited plans.

Netflix spills its top-10 shows and movies by hours watched for the first time

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body” data-component=”trackCWV”>

Stranger Things is among the shows that a new hours-watched metric reveals are more popular than Netflix’s previous metrics indicated.

Netflix

released top-10 rankings Monday for its most popular original shows and movies by the number of hours that people watched them in total during the first month of their release, the first time it has disclosed that kind of data for its programming. (And in about two weeks, Netflix’s breakout hit , a Korean dystopian horror series, may be the once it hits its own one month mark.)

For the last couple of years, has been more aggressive in publicizing its most popular titles, but typically its viewership stats were based on the number of accounts that viewed at least two minutes of a program — a metric sometimes criticized for not really showing how many people watched a title, just how many sampled it. The hours-watched metric also demonstrates the strength of some shows that were released before Netflix began to be consistently vocal about viewership stats, or those that were released so long ago that Netflix simply had millions fewer accounts out there to sample them than newer shows enjoy,

‘ third season, for example, is Netflix’s fifth most popular show by number of accounts sampling it. But by hours watched, the third season of moves up to Netflix’s No. 3 most popular original series — and its second season, which came out when Netflix had 100 million fewer subscribers than it has now, is its No. 8 top show by hours watched.

Retro sci-fi series  is one of just three shows that show up in the hours-watched top-10 list twice. , a Spanish-language series also known as La Casa de Papel, and , a teen series that’s been criticized for its depiction of suicide, also reappear on the list of shows by most hours watched. Their reoccurrence in the rankings reflects how hours watched, as a metric, can be a better gauge of the enduring appeal of particular titles.

But the hours-watched metric also has some drawbacks: For example, it favors movies and TV seasons that simply have longer runtimes. Three-and-a-half-hour long  suddenly appears up high in Netflix’s film top-10 list by hours watched, even though it falls far short of a top-10 ranking if you count how many accounts sampled it.

For years, Netflix was notoriously tight-lipped about viewership. The creator of , which put Netflix’s original content efforts on the map, once said the company wouldn’t even share viewership metrics with him. But within the last two years, Netflix has grown much chattier about the popularity of its shows and movies, to help recruit talent and stoke buzz. It also added a top-trending ranking to its service, so people can see what the most popular titles streaming on Netflix in their country are on any given day.

But Netflix’s audience stats have exasperated parts of the TV industry for being unverified, unsupported and disclosed without much accountability.

“We’re trying to be more transparent with the market, with the talent, with everybody,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said Monday at the Code conference in Los Angeles, where Netflix unveiled the new rankings.
